It’s windy today here in Wellington. That’s quite normal, but when I first moved here as a bride in 1987 I found it difficult. I remember struggling to get the washing on the line – large sheets over a rotary clothes-line – just as I had the bulk of it ready to peg up, the wind would blow the whole thing around and the sheet would wrap around the pole! It was very frustrating, and I fought against that wind for ages!
After living here for 25 years I have grown to appreciate the wind – I now know how to peg up the washing in the same direction as the wind, and I look forward to a good stiff breeze, because it dries things in such a short time!
The Holy Spirit is like the winds of Wellington – when you’re not used to it, it’s easy to fight against the direction it seems to be taking you. It’s easy to have your own agenda, and decide where you want to go, and expect the Spirit to fall into line and bless you. But when the wind of the Holy Spirit has other ideas, I have learnt that it’s best to go with it – you will go to far more exciting places if you let go and let God blow you away!
This doesn’t apply to washing though, or my sheets would have ended up in Cook Strait many years ago!
John 3:8 “The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
