This is what my 5 year old thought was the title of the song we were singing in the kitchen. I told him, no, dear, it’s ‘follow’ Jesus, but it got me thinking. Maybe swallowing Jesus could be about communion – I have decided to go to church and share a meal with my Christian brothers and sisters. Then I thought, we are what we eat, so if we swallow Jesus, alla transubstantiation, do we become like Jesus? Made of the same stuff? That’s quite exciting really – deliberately taking Jesus into our system helps us become like him!
And if we eat some foods, like garlic, they come out through our pores for days, so if we swallow Jesus, do we emanate the sweet smell of Jesus to those around us? That is, do our actions seem consistent with what we profess as Christians,- that God loves us, and God loves everyone else too, so we need to love them as God does. We can get a bit more technical in terms of doctrine, but it’s really quite simple.
What makes us different from other people who are kind to their neighbours, is that we do it because God first loved us, not just because it seems like the right thing to do forenlightened (and self-interested?) people.
I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back.
