Sermon: The Wedding at Cana

The Wedding at Cana. John 2:1-11

This reading is very familiar. Most of us have heard it many times, and yet it seems to reveal new riches each time we go to it.

At face value, it’s a simple story of a family and community event – a wedding.

But in its context, it’s the very first miracle recorded. Jesus was affirmed and honoured for public ministry in last week’s reading, then tempted in the wilderness. Now he’s back home, taking part in a regular, normal event. Note that Mary was already at the wedding when Jesus and his disciples arrived – it is likely that she was closely related to the couple and was there in an ‘official’ capacity, as family.
